Windermere Estate is an 18 room boutique hotel perched on the hill slopes of Munnar on the Western Ghats with expansive view of tea estates. This family run property owes its name to one of the oldest cardamom plantation in the region. Set in the midst of a 55 acre cardamom & coffee estate , Windermere promises a true plantation experience with a unique blend of simplicity & luxury, combining modern convenience with old world charm.
Rooms
At Windermere, we have always been partial to minimalism instead of embellishment, and homely warmth over opulence. The rooms here are set in bungalows that are a throwback to the old ways of life: gabled roofs; high ceilings; beams of red cedar; teak furniture; terracotta floors rubbed with linseed oil and hardwood floor polished with traditional wax; linen furnishings lovingly embroidered by women from the planter’s family; and crochet and cross-stitch art framed on walls. Cooled by the surrounding mist all day, there are no fans or air conditioner here, for none are ever required.
Garden Rooms
Perfectly set, our garden rooms are about 350 sq ft, they enjoy the luxury of a veranda with either a view of the valley or the garden.
Cottage Rooms
Every cottage is about 650 sq ft, and enjoys an unimpeded view of the valley. Named after the crops that grow around us, we have two Coffee cottages with a cozy sit in area,and the rest six 'Cardamom', Vanilla', & 'Tea' cottages have their own balconies.
Planters Villa
The 1,200 sq ft rooms come with wooden flooring, a sitting area, a semi-dining area, big bathrooms and a balcony and large windows that offer a breathtaking view of the mountains. Besides the delightful whiff of lemongrass and eucalyptus lingering in the air, each room has its own character and has been designed with thoughtful inputs offered by our guests over the years. For instance, we added balconies where there were none earlier. Our beds are bigger—6 ½ ft long— so your feet never hang over the edge. Even our armchairs have been crafted with more generous dimensions.

We offer a thoughtful choice of Continental, Oriental and Indian cuisine for meals as well as breakfasts. Also making a frequent appearance on our table d’hote menu are many of our family recipes handed down by generations of inventive Syrian Christian Malayali women who took great pride in their kitchens and backyard gardens. To keep the cherished legacy alive, we have been growing an assortment of fruits and vegetables on our estate for several years now—bananas, passion fruit, tree tomatoes, guavas, and gooseberries, to name a few—just so we can bring you fresh food as best as we can. Even the pure honey served on our tables is all thanks to the diligent bee-keepers on our plantation.

Plantation Walks
Every evening, we conduct a walk through our cardamon plantation. The 4 km route takes about 2 hours to cover, and packs more than a few exhilarating moments. As cardamom can only grow in restrained sunlight, a dense cover of evergreens shelter the plantation. Keep your binoculars and ornithology reckoner handy, as you will spot more than a few dozen varieties of birds and butterflies. (All through the estate, we grow different varieties of plants expressly to attract butterflies.) Our naturalists who conduct the tour will introduce you to not just botanical terms and peculiar characteristics of the flora and fauna, but also the charming folk lore associated with leaves, flowers and birdsounds.
